Columbus Figure Skating Club

The Columbus Figure Skating Club is a not-for-profit corporation in the State of Ohio, and has been a member of the United States Figure Skating Association since 1960. The club exists for the purpose of advancing all aspects of figure skating for skaters of all ages and ability levels. To this end, the club provides ice sessions dedicated to freestyle, dance, moves in the field and group learn-to-skate instruction.

Membership Information

Membership in the Columbus Figure Skating Club is open to anyone interested in pursuing or encouraging the sport of figure skating.  There is no minimum skating skill level required to become a Club member. Our members practice and receive instruction at various ice rinks in the Columbus area as well as throughout Ohio and the region. The Club purchases and offers to its members ice at the Ohio State University Ice Rink several times per week. There are varied categories of membership: individual, additional family member, Collegiate and non-home club membership. The non-home club membership is for those who have a regular membership with another club, but wish to skate or test on CFSC ice. All CFSC members are also members of US Figure Skating, the national governing body of our sport.

The annual membership directory is created based on the information you submit, so please write legibly.  New members are welcome to join at any time during the year, but membership fees cannot be pro-rated. Contact the Columbus Figure Skating Club membership chair with questions.

Club Sessions at the Ohio State University Ice Rink

As a service to our members, the club purchases private ice at the Ohio State University ice rink to provide dedicated, monitored sessions that are geared towards faster-paced, multi-directional practice and private instruction for freestyle, moves in the field, and ice dancing.  Sessions are limited to a maximum of 25 skaters and are governed by ice safety rules and procedures.  Monitors reinforce the ice rules and play music for skaters, ensuring that all skaters have equal opportunity to have their program music or compulsory dance music played.  Skaters whose music is being played wear a neon vest to aid in identifying that they have right of way and should be given the best opportunity to place their program elements without interference from other skaters and coaches.  Club members are encouraged to support club sessions but are not required to do so.

For the safety of all participants, skaters on these sessions must have passed at least US Figure Skating Basic Skills Level 6 unless they are going to be under instruction the entire time they are on the ice. Members who are still acquiring fundamental basic skills are encouraged to take advantage of the numerous other options to practice on rink-run ice throughout the area.  The Columbus Figure Skating Club purchases additional ice to offer our own “Skate With Us” learn to skate group lesson program.  These lessons are a tremendous opportunity to obtain affordable instruction in a group setting from our highly qualified skating professionals. Instruction

The Columbus Figure Skating Club maintains a yearly roster of highly qualified professionals who may teach on club sessions. Skating professionals who have personally achieved or coached students at the junior freestyle or silver dance test level and higher are always encouraged to apply. PSA ratings and a successful teaching history are also a consideration for potential pros who are close to this level. Club members are free to select a teaching professional of their choice but may not receive instruction during club sessions from non-approved pros. Skaters and club pros desiring to bring a consulting choreographer or dance partnering pro onto a session are asked to obtain approval from the Board of Directors well in advance. This also applies to ballet instructors, etc. working from off-ice. No one is permitted to be on the ice without skates. Group “Skate With Us” Lessons  — new sessions begin throughout the year!  Lessons are open to the general public as well as members of the Columbus Figure Skating Club.  Pre-registration is strongly encouraged to avoid being closed out. Group lessons are structured for all ages, tots through adults, and provide a strong basis for future figure skating, hockey or speed skating.  Skating is a great form of exercise that the entire family can enjoy together  . . .  why sit and wait for your child when you can be on the ice yourself in our popular adult class!

Out of Town Guests

Since Columbus Figure Skating Club sessions have been purchased for our members, by our members, guests are not permitted to skate, with the exception of single-time period visitors (two week maximum) who are members of US Figure Skating (and are Basic Level 6 or higher) and reside outside a 50 mile radius of Columbus.  Out of town skaters or members of other clubs who wish to regularly practice or receive instruction during club sessions join the Columbus Figure Skating Club as non-home club members. Please check in with the ice monitor at rinkside (not the ice rink front desk) and be prepared to show your US Figure Skating membership card.
